Program Length and Number of Positions
Certificate Program: A 24-month 1-week program commencing the second half of June each year. Six new positions are available each year.

M.S. Program: Simultaneous enrollment in the certificate program and a Master of Science program is available. In addition to the requirements for the certificate program, Master of Science candidates must submit an original research project and thesis and complete additional course work. M.S. degree requirements may be accomplished in less than 36 months.

Description
The program in pediatric dentistry is designed to offer the advanced student a mixture of didactic and clinical experiences. Emphasis is placed on hospital and clinical dentistry, and includes experiences in general anesthesia, conscious sedation, special patient care, and interceptive and preventive orthodontics. Rotations through Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital and Houston Medical Center (a pediatric ambulatory care clinic which is designed to simulate a private practice setting). Month long pediatric medicine and anesthesiology rotations are completed during the second half of the first year of training. The program is approved and accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Upon successful completion of the certificate program, the student satisfies the eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Curriculum
Certificate Program: The certificate program consists of 24 months of training. The curriculum includes training in all aspects of contemporary pediatric dentistry, including preventive dentistry, behavior management, conscious sedation, preventive and interceptive orthodontics, practice management, dental care for the special patient, general anesthesia, pediatric medicine, and participation in a variety of multidisciplinary management teams. The curriculum is delivered through various instructional modalities including lectures, seminars, clinical rotations, and independent learning contracts. Activities take place within the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the country. Master of Science Degree: Residents interested in a Master of Science degree in addition to their certificate, may pursue this program concurrently although the program may extend into a third year. Specific detailed information regarding a Master of Science degree can be obtained from the program director.

Program Stipend and Tuition
Resident stipends are approximately $14,000 the first year and $24,000 the second year plus fringe benefits. Current information regarding stipends and benefits can be obtained from the program director.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must have available the following credentials to be considered for admission:

  1. DDS, DMD or equivalent Dental and pre-professional education transcripts.
  2. National Board examination results.
  3. Three letters of recommendation.
  4. Personal interview.
